Amid a politically charged atmosphere in Madurai following a judicial order to light a lamp at the ‘Deepathoon’ in Thirupparankundram hill, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday (December 5, 2025) morning asked in a social media post whether the city needed development politics or some other kind of politics.
“Madurai needs development politics or … politics? The people will decide. Metro rail, AIIMS, new industries and employment! It is these that the people of Madurai want!” Mr. Stalin said in a social media post.

A petitioner in the case, armed with orders from the Madras High Court, attempted to go atop the hill to light the lamp for the second day on Thursday evening, even as district administration and police officers sought to maintain law and order in the hill and prevented his attempt.
